Overseas engineers arrive in Samoa to help rescue container vessel

8:26 am on 2 September 2009

The Samoa government has sought assistance from New Zealand and Australia to help rescue the Forum Samoa container vessel which ran aground near the main Apia wharf.

Sources say the vessel has yet to unload its cargo since she became stuck last Friday.

Strong winds have made also made it difficult for Samoa Port Authority tug boats to pull the Forum Samoa II vessel.

The Pacific Forum Line company, which owns the boat, has not said why the ferry ran aground.

But the Ministry Works says top officials of the shipping company will arrive later this week to consider safety measures to protect the vessel.

Meanwhile, a deep sea fishing boat also ran aground on Monday morning just meters from the Forum Samoa.

The fishing boat was not informed by the Samoa Ports Authority that the Forum Samoa had run aground.
