Commonwealth suspension means little, says Fiji Retailers Association

The Fiji Retailers Association says Fiji's suspension from the Commonwealth will not have any negative impact on the country's business community.

The organisation says Fiji businesses have found that being within the Commonwealth did not do much for trade or aid in Fiji.

It says there were few gains from membership for the common people so business wise the suspension will make little difference.

Meanwhile the Fiji branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society, which engages with civil society organisations in the country, says it will carry on its work, despite the suspension.

Its President Juris Gulbis says they have been encouraged by the Commonwealth Secretariat to continue to interact.

"We may have been fully suspended from the Commonwealth but the Royal Commonwealth Society will continue to do everything to ensure that the Fiji citizens remain active within the Commonwealth family."
