Fiji's National Federation Party says suspension is shameful

The National Federation Party in Fiji says the country's suspension from the Commonwealth is yet another sad but shameful chapter in Fiji's coup ridden history.

The National Federation Party says the Commonwealth has been lenient with Fiji as it has been almost three years since the December 2006 coup, while the Harare Declaration usually gives a Commonwealth nation two years to return to democracy after any political upheaval.

But the party's president says two key parties are now realising their future lies in a return to democracy.

Raman Singh, says both the Labour Party of Mahendra Chaudry and the SDL Party of former prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, benefited from supporting the 2006 coup.

He says it hasn't gone unnoticed that after falling out with coup leader Frank Bainimarama, they've now joined forces to urge the international community to help restore democracy.

"I think Mahendra Chaudhry would be a bigger laughing stock because of his changing views. He initially supported the coup, he was part of the cabinet. Now he is realising his mistake, and is appealing to the international community for help. People realise that he has let them down."
