Fiji's military regime says it wants to explain why it is delaying elections to 2014 when it meets a Commonwealth envoy next week following its suspension from the international grouping.
Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth this week because the regime had ignored demands to schedule elections by October next year.
The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama,says in a statement, his regime looks forward to the three-day visit of Commonwealth special representative Paul Reeves to explain why elections could not be held soon.
He says the process and holding of elections must be preceded by reforms that will ensure that Fiji ends the coup culture and has sustainable and true democracy.
Commodore Bainimarama says Fiji cherishes its membership of the Commonwealth and believes the grouping can help Fiji resolve its problems.
