Journals of the Polynesian Society digitised

The Journal of the Polynesian Society in New Zealand says it's digitised its historic Polynesian journals to allay fears that the information would be lost to public use.

About 100 digitised volumes of the journals have been posted to the internet, and feature more than 3-thousand articles, photographs and maps.

The journals were first produced in 1892.

Judith Huntsman, the Society's editor, says the idea to have them electronically available came from the Library at the University of Auckland.

"So there was concern that it might be better, rather than trying to protect the paper journals, it might be better to make these available in electronic form."
