Law Society in Fiji seek explanation from interim government over AGM cancellation

The Law Society in Fiji has sought an explanation from the interim government for revoking the permit for its annual general meeting.

Police have confirmed the permit has been cancelled, despite earlier giving consent.

The Society's president, Dorsami Naidu, says he's surprised by the decision because it's only a simple AGM meeting, which included nothing controversial.

Mr Naidu says he thinks it could be a strategy by officials to show their authority.

"They may be trying to tell us to basically come to heel as it were to do their bidding I think, more than anything else. And the only other thing I can think of is that they basically don't know what they're doing, it's just a spare of the moment decision they've made."

Dorsami Naidu says it's considering holding parts of its AGM, like the election of officers, by email.

The interim regime declined to comment on the matter.
