Fiji regime and Commonwealth delegation to begin talking today

10:38 am on 9 September 2009

The Fiji military led regime is today expected to begin two days of talks with a three member team from the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth's Special Representative, former New Zealand Governor General, Sir Paul Reeves, remained optimistic, saying although Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth it's important to focus on a way forward.

He has told the Fiji Times he's looking forward to speaking to Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

He says his delegation and the interim administration need to explore the relationship they still have together and see what can be done to help Fiji back to constitutional democracy.

Sir Paul is accompanied by two senior staff from the Commonwealth Secretariat.
