Police in the Vanuatu capital, Port Vila, have laid charge of careless driving against the city's mayor, Paul Avock, following the death of a 12 year old boy who was jolted off the back of the mayor's truck.

The accident happened near Mele Village, about 10 kilometres outside the city centre.

Daren Firiam was ejected from the back of the double cabin truck when the mayor tried to avoid a pot hole in the middle of the road.

He died instantly.

Police have appealed to vehicle operators not to let children ride on the backs of trucks.
