Vanuatu fishing vessel hits Port Vila reef

1:33 pm on 16 September 2009

A long line fishing boat belonging to the newly established Vanuatu Tuna Fishing Company is stuck on a reef in Port Vila harbour.

The vessel hit the reef this morning when it wanted to leave the port after discharging its catch at the factory.

Port Vila market vendors who witnessed the incident said that the fishing vessel was trying to make a short cut by bypassing two navigation buoys between the mainland and the Iririki Island Resort.

Efforts are underway to pull the vessel off the reef.

The authorities say at this stage there is no risk of pollution.
