Vanuatu fruit picker dies in car crash in New Zealand

A 58-year-old woman is dead and two people injured after a van carrying five ni-Vanuatu crashed after it overtook another vehicle in the New Zealand region of Waikato today.

STUFF New Zealand reports police saying the group, part of a larger group of 17, were heading to Auckland airport to travel home, when the incident happened at Ngatea, near Paeroa.

Constable Shane Doddrell of Paeroa police says the ni-Vanuatu had been working as kiwifruit pickers in New Zealand for the last six months.

The woman died at the scene and two others with serious injuries are now in Waikato Hospital.
