Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, who is also the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, has told the United Nations General Assembly that the South Pacific is part of the human face of climate change.

Mr Rudd says with the impact of climate change, time is already running out for the island states of the Pacific.

He says coastal inundation is not a prospect but a reality.

Half the population of Pacific island states resides within 1.5 kilometres of the coast.
