French Polynesia adopts mini budget

6:18 pm on 24 September 2009

The French Polynesian assembly has passed a mini budget with the backing of 42 of the assembly's 57 members.

This came despite differences within the ruling coalition over last week's decision by the government to grant a licence to a foreign company to provide a fast ferry service between Tahiti and the Leeward islands.

The arrival of the King Tamatoa ferry is being opposed by many shipowners, prompting one assembly member, Temauri Foster, to threaten to quit the ruling coalition.

Last week, ferry services were stopped for a day in protest at the government move.
