Precedent indicates Fiji ban from Commonwealth Games likely

There is still no confirmation on whether Fiji will be allowed to take part in next year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

But the chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Michael Hooper, told a meeting in the Cook Islands of Oceania member countries, including Fiji, that a ban from competing in Delhi is possible.

Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth for refusing to meet a call for elections next year.

Mr Hooper says a final decision will be made at a Federation general assembly in Delhi on October 12th.

"It is possible that Fiji will be precluded from participating at the Games. Now that's not a definitive statement, but certainly based on historical precedents, for example Nigeria, from 1995 to 1999 - they were in exactly same situation, full suspension from the Commonwealth - then that is a possibility."
