Hallmarks of inside job in Tonga Development Bank theft

12:13 pm on 25 September 2009

The head of Tonga's police force says the theft of cash and cheques from the Tonga Development Bank has the markings of an inside job.

Commander Chris Kelley says the money was taken from a safe inside the bank six weeks ago and as far as he knows is the country's biggest bank theft.

He says so far police haven't been able to find the thieves and they've also to confirm the exact nature of the crime.

"It occurred overnight so for all intents and purposes you might normally describe it as a burglary but whether it's a burglary or a theft it's yet to be determined. There is some element of inside knowledge either by the perpretators or people associated with them so we've got to work that through and that's one of the intriguing features of this particular case."
