Kokoda trekkers warned to be prepared for tough walk

An emergency medical service in Papua New Guinea says the Kokoda Track is no walk in the park and trekkers need to be sure they are capable of completing it.

Brad Bailey, who runs the PNG arm of Medevac Pacific Services, was speaking after the third death on the track this year.

Paul Bradfield, a 38 year old from Townsville, who was walking the track to raise funds for a cancer charity, died on Sunday.

Mr Bailey says while the Kokoda Track is growing in popularity, there has been an exponential increase in the numbers requiring medical aid.

He says people need to have rigorous health assessments before tackling what is a tough walk.

"It's very tough and I think a lot of people have got this false impression as to what it's all about. But it is very tough rugged and hostile terrain out there and the environment is not conducive to, you know, a walk in the park."
