New Caledonian President to address UN this week

7:36 am on 5 October 2009

The New Caledonian president, Philippe Gomes, will address the United Nations Decolonisation Committee in New York this week.

Mr Gomes is to present an update of the situation and express the views of the territory's institutions, and not that of a party.

Our Noumea correspondent, Claudine Wery, says in recent years only the pro-independence FLNKS movement went to New York.

"Last time the government of New Caledonia went before this committee was in 2000. In the time in-between the only delegation was from the FLNKS pro-independence party."
