Wallis and Futuna people angered by lack of tsunami warning

There is concern among people in Wallis and Futuna that last week's earthquake and tsunami occurred without local officials triggering an alarm.

Although only a few hundred kilometres west of the Samoan islands, Wallis and Futuna were spared any major damage.

The AFP news agency quotes bloggers as saying an alarm and an evacuation would have been advisable, pointing to the fact that there are four sirens in Wallis and five in Futuna.

But officials say there is no around the clock staffing at the relevant administration to set off the sirens.

They also say last week there would have been no time between receiving the tsunami warning and the wave hitting the islands.
