The Tonga telecom company, Tonga Communications Corporation, reports that land-line telephone communication into and out of the tsunami battered northern island of Niuatoputapu, have been fully restored.

But to prevent congestion callers are asked to go through the operators for the time being when placing a call.

Nine people were killed when the tsunami swept across the island a week ago.

Meanwhile, the Operation Niuatoputapu command post on the island has indicated that the water supply for the village of Hihifo has been fully restored.

But they also report there is an urgent need for basic school supplies and spare parts and fuel for motor vehicles.
