FAO to help restore livelihoods in Samoa disaster zone

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation is aiming to help restore the livelihoods of victims of the tsunami in Samoa.

Its sub-regional representative, Vili Fuavao, says the FAO response will assist with the restoration of sustainable small-scale fishing and agriculture in the stricken coastal areas.

This will include the replacement of lost fishing equipment, such as small boats, nets and lines, the restocking of backyard poultry and livestock, and providing new farming tools.

Mr Fuavao says the FAO will also continue to encourage the consumption of locally grown vegetables and other crops, such as island cabbage, or laupele, to help diversify the diets of the affected populations.
