Seventy hand-knitted blankets have been distributed to families at Port Moresby hospital in Papua New Guinea.

Unicef New Zealand sent the blankets to PNG, following a campaign focussing on preventing mother to child transmission of HIV.

In Papua New Guinea, nearly two percent of the population is infected by HIV.

Unicef PNG's representative, Dr. Bertrand Desmoulins, says some of the blankets were distibuted to patients in the pediatric ward, and another 30 were left at the nursery.

"We are working on the front of reducing maternal mortality and of course to prevent also the transmission from parent to child. Which means to avoid the transmission from the father to the mother first, and then from the mother on to the child. The maternal mortality is also terrible in this country, that's what we are tackling at the moment. You have HIV, but you have a huge maternal mortality which needs to be reduced."
