Tong Sang advocates new French Polynesia government

The leader of French Polynesia's To Tatou Aia Party, Gaston Tong Sang, has spoken out in favour of a coalition with the opposition Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party of Gaston Flosse.

Mr Tong Sang, who resigned as president in February, then joined the opposition's Oscar Temaru to form a new government.

He has now told the AFP news agency that he has not heard a single comment to say that the current government can advance the terrritory of help it come out of its crisis.

Mr Tong Sang says all possible combinations have been tried except a To Tatou Aia/Tahoreaa link-up.

He says last year's election gave a majority of votes to those two parties and therefore they have to revisit that choice.

After the election the Tahoeraa chose to support Mr Temaru's camp, which prompted France's ruling party to sever all ties with the Tahoeraa.

At the beginning of this month, Mr Tong Sang said he would no longer take part in meetings of the so-called majority although his party formally still belongs to it.
