Fono session in American Samoa to consider tsunami aid

12:36 pm on 14 October 2009

The American Samoa governor Togiola Tulafono has called for a special session of the Fono to convene today, which will consider a bill on distributing tsunami aid donations.

The 10-day special session will also consider a bill authorising five million US dollars from the government loan repayment account to finance the acquisition of the assets of Chicken of the Sea.

Hearings on the bill were scheduled for the day of the tsunami, but were cancelled when it occurred two weeks ago.

Also on the agenda are other matters delayed because of the tsunami.

In a letter to Fono leaders, the governor says he is confident lawmakers will recognize the urgent need to consider these important matters.
