Three tsunami-hit elementary schools in American Samoa will remain closed until the end of the week.

The Education Department's director, Dr Claire Poumele, says Matatula, Masefau and Leatele schools will remain closed until Friday because renovation and repair work is still being carried out.

The department will issue an advisory later in the week as to when they'll reopen.

A school destroyed by the tusnami, Taputapu elementary school in the shoreline village of Poloa, will not be reopened and students will attend nearby Alataua Lua School.
