Niue's pensioners have received a surprise state birthday present with the Premier Toke Talagi announcing an increase in pensions of more than ten percent during the country's Constitution celebrations.

The pension is to go from 135 US dollars a fortnight to 150 US dollars.

Niue is one of the few Pacific countries that pays pensions and child allowances to its permanent residents.
