Biosecurity officials are investigating whether an iguana-like lizard seen swimming around Fiji's northern islands needs to be destroyed.
Biosecurity department director, Hiagi Foraete, says reports of a funny-looking creatures around Taveuni and its surrounding islands have been coming in since August.
Last month, a team of wildlife experts, biosecurity officials and academics travelled to the islands and confirmed it existed.
Mr Foraete says they're investigating if the marine lizard is exotic and whether it's a threat to the island's ecosystem.
"How did it come to Fiji, all those information that will help us plan out our management strategy to control the spread, and whether it is a possibility to eradicate if needs be."
Hiagi Foraete says the lizard might have come into Fiji as a pet, which then escaped.
