8:27 pm on 26 October 2009

Samoa has become the 188th country to join the internatonal police organisation, Interpol, with the establishment of a desk at the National Central Bureau.

The secretary general of Interpol, Ronald Noble, who took part in the opening ceremony over the week-end, praised Samoa' s decision to join, saying it had a great deal to offer the global policing community.

Mr Noble says this was highlighted recently during an Interpol led operation in which an alleged rapist wanted in New Zealand was located and identified in Samoa.

A senior police officer has initially been assigned to the local Interpol desk.
