National consultations to be made part of PACER Plus negotiations

8:28 pm on 26 October 2009

Pacific Islands Forum Trade Ministers have endorsed calls by NGOs and others for extensive national consultations over the PACER Plus plan for closer economic interaction in the region.

At an initial meeting on PACER Plus in Brisbane at the weekend the Ministers agreed that national consultations with non state actors are essential.

They also want them to have input at an annual Trade Ministers' meeting.

The Secretary General of the Forum, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, says just who becomes involved is up to the Ministers to decide.

"The non state actors, of course, it comprises a number of groups, and I think Ministers themselves have a very good idea who should be involved. I am sure the chief trade advisor will also advise on particular areas, particular groups who should be invited."
