The authorities in New Caledonia say a 19-year-old inmate has escaped from the Noumea jail, bringing the number of jailbreaks this year to 14.

Kevin Namuli used a screw driver to break out of his cell and then used sheets to get over the perimeter walls.

He was convicted 30 times for burglaries and car thefts and was to be kept in prison until 2018.

The prison suffers from overcrowding as it holds 420 inmates while it was designed to have 190 prisoners.
