Fiji taxis warned to keep using meters

2:54 pm on 28 October 2009

Taxi drivers in Fiji are being warned by the Land Transport Authority not to stop using taxi meters, following complaints.

Members of the public have told Radio Fiji that some drivers claim the meters are only for use on sealed roads and not gravel roads.

The LTA Chief Executive Etuate Koroi has told Radio Fiji that drivers will lose their licences and taxi permits if they're caught not using the meters or overcharging passengers.

Mr Koroi says the authority is urging people to note down the numbers of any taxi operators who refuse to use the meters.

He says passengers have the right to decide whether they want the meter on, but taxi drivers have no such choice.
