Papua provincial adminstration to build hydro-power plant

12:19 pm on 5 November 2009

The Papua provincial administration is planning to build a 2,000 megawatt hydro-power plant to meet electricity demand and to support infrastructure needs in the Indonesian Province.

The Jakarta Post quotes Papua's Governor Barnabas Suebu as saying it's currently studying whether it's feasible.

Mr Suebu says the plant will eventually generate 2,000 MW in total, but will start with a 300-MW power plant and build it up in steps.

He says the administration would be one of those financing the project, while also inviting other investors.

However, he did not disclose the designated time for the studies to be completed or for the plant to commence operation.
