No party secures majority in Vanuatu capital local election

4:18 pm on 6 November 2009

Unofficial results of the Port Vila municipal elections in Vanuatu show that none of the seven political parties contesting yesterday's elections managed to secure a majority of the 14 seats.

The unofficial results indicate that the parties of the coalition government of the prime minister, Edward Natapei have secured 10 seat against four by the opposition.

Among the 14 elected councillors is the outgoing mayor, Paul Avock Hungai, who managed to keep his seat despite his alleged involvement in the death of a 12-year-old boy in a motor accident.

The electoral office says the electoral commission meets this afternoon and the official result should be known during the weekend.
