Chairman of American Samoa Red Cross drowns in a diving trip

12:10 pm on 10 November 2009

The chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and former Post Master Smitty McMoore drowned yesterday morning while diving at Gatavai.

Mr McMoore had worked tirelessly in the relief and recovery efforts after the September 29th tsunami.

His wife Sala says her husband had taken two members of the national Red Cross diving yesterday.

Mr McMoore moved his family to American Samoa from California about five years ago when he was appointed post Master, a position form which he resigned in September.

He had been elected chairman of the Red Cross a few months ago where he spearheaded a territorial fund raiser and brought many new volunteers to the Red Cross.
