More than 1.6 million US dollars will be paid out to the beneficiaries of 32 Fiji soldiers killed and over 100 soldiers who were injured while serving as United Nations peace keepers.

The Fiji Times reports Cabinet has approved the compensation for those servicemen who were injured or died while serving under the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon and Sinai between 1978 and 1997.

The interim Defence Minister and a former military commander, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, says the compensation is long overdue.

A statement said affected servicemen or their beneficiaries will be compensated in 2010 and 2011.
