9:12 pm on 18 November 2009

The Tonga Government says it's received a high level of commitment from its major development partners to plans for a major increase in renewable energy generation.

The Government and the development partners, including the Asian Development Bank, Australia, China, the European Commission, Japan, New Zealand, and the World Bank have been meeting in Vava'u.

Tonga wants to cut its dependence on diesel generation to 50 percent in three years.

The meeting has agreed to complete a Draft Tonga Energy Roadmap to provide a clear view on priority areas, estimates of costs and benefits from the programme.
