8:55 am on 20 November 2009

A National Population Census has begun in Vanuatu

The Daily Post newspaper reports that enumerators have been sent out in an attempt to collect statistical data from each household over a two-week period.

Questions people will be asked relate to their age, education background, employment, number of children and living circumstances.

The results of the national count are expected in the middle of next year.

The Census is held in Vanuatu every 10 years.

The last census in 1999 put the total population at 186,000.
