Australian opposition party says Rudd should fix domestic policy first

The Australian opposition says the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should fix his domestic policy first rather than seek to put Australia's immigration problems on regional neighbours.

The opposition immigration spokesperson, Sharman Stone, was commenting after Papua New Guinea officials said they were prepared to reopen the Manus Island detention centre to help solve Mr Rudd's problems with asylum seekers.

Dr Stone says if Mr Rudd sought to open or announce the opening of more detention centres, wherever they might be, it is an acknowledgment he has lost control of Australia's immigration policy.

Nauru, which hosted Australia's biggest offshore refugee processing centre, says it is ready to discuss with Australia a possible reopening of the facility.
