Vanuatu parliament adjourned over bill delays

2:30 pm on 23 November 2009

The speaker of the Vanuatu parliament, Maxime Carlot Korman, has adjourned today's extra-ordinary session until tomorrow, following a request from the former deputy prime minister, Ham Lini.

Mr Lini, who was dumped last week by the prime minister, Edward Natapei, and is now in opposition, told the parliament that MPs have not had enough time to read through the new bills.

He says most MPs received the bills only on arrival in Port Vila during the weekend.

Parliament's rules stipulate that MPs must have the bills two weeks before a session starts.

There are nine bills listed to be debated during this extra-ordinary session.

It's to be followed early next month by an ordinary session during which the budget will be debated.

The government has indicated its spending in 2010 will increase by ten million US dollars to 150 million US dollars.
