Voters only trickling into polls in CNMI Governor's run off election

4:19 pm on 23 November 2009

Voters have been trickling in to polling booths for the CNMI's runoff election for governor, despite higher numbers this morning.

Our correspondent says many elderly voters had lined up before polling opened, but after they had voted, numbers fell away.

Voters are choosing between incumbent Benigno Fitial and challenger Heinz Hofschneider.

Mr Hofschneider edged Governor Fital in the November 7th general election by just 8 votes, but neither gained the fifty percent plus one required under the CNMI's election law.

Election polls close at 7 o'clock tonight.
