Tonga has launched an electronic company register.

It is the first Pacific Islands country to make use of the technology which the government says will simplify business registration procedures and reduce the time it takes to start a business.

The first business to register under the new system was the Friendly Islands Satellite Communications company which is part owned by the King's sister Princess Pilolevu Tuita.

The acting Prime Minister Viliami Tangi says it will be easier for businesses to register and to house their records securely and safely online.

The government requires all companies to re-register within the next six months.

it says there's no fee involved but businesses will need to complete the necessary paperwork.
