Singapore Economic Co-operation to review Fiji's National Provident

10:11 am on 2 December 2009

The Singapore Economic Co-operation is to review the Fiji National Provident to see how reforms can be carried out so the fund can focus on its core function of pensions.

The interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who is also the minister of finance, announced that a number of agencies are targeted for reform and review in 2010.

The Fiji Times reports him as saying the National Provident Fund, Fiji Electricity Authority, Fiji Sugar Corporation and Government Printing are the key institutions.

The World Bank assessment team and the recent actuary valuation by Mercer has noted that FNPF must embark on major review for reforms to place the Fund in a position of sustainability.

FNPF will be assisted by the Singapore Economic Co-operation in this exercise.

The move has been welcomed by the business community as well as civil society.
