Food aid arrives in Solomons Temotu province

2:36 pm on 3 December 2009

The first consignment of relief food supplies has reached Solomon Islands Temotu Province for distribution to communities affected by crop failures.

The Disaster Co-coordinator of Temotu province, Frank Menoia, says about 18 tonnes of grains is being offloaded in Temotu's provincial capital, Lata.

Mr Menoia says the supplies are for two wards only and are meant to last them two months.

Another four wards will receive their supplies later in the month.

Mr Menoia says the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office secured the food supplies after Temotu authorities lodged an appeal for emergency relief.

The atoll communities in Temotu experience food shortages each year.
