Vanuatu Speaker to appeal decision overturning Natapei ousting

4:31 pm on 7 December 2009

The office of Vanuatu's Speaker of Parliament says it plans to appeal the decision of the Chief Justice, Vincent Lunabek, who overturned the Speaker's earlier decision to strip the Prime Minister of his parliamentary seat.

The Prime Minister was set to lose his seat after the Speaker, Maxime Carlot Korman, found he had missed three consecutive sittings, without submitting an authorised written explanation.

But Justice Lunabek said he was satisfied the Speaker was made aware that Prime Minister Edward Natapei would be attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mr Korman has 14 days to appeal the Chief Justice's ruling.
