Power back on for American Samoa businesses

12:25 pm on 9 December 2009

StarKist Samoa cannery and other major businesses in American Samoa are now back on a government power grid following developments in the territory's power restoration project.

Tier two of the three tier plan has been completed on the main island of Tutuila following the tsunami in September that completely destroyed the Satala Power Plant.

Eighteen generator units, each producing one-megawatt were installed two weeks ago serving the Eastern District under what's now called Aggreko-Satala Grid.

Last week StarKist Samoa was back on this grid as well as COS Samoa Packing's cold storage facility.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says getting electricity back to full operational capacity is among the urgent needs because it had affected local businesses, with some of the large ones depending on their own generators.
