At least 5,000 people are now confirmed to be affected in some way by last week's floods in Papua New Guinea's Oro province according to preliminary figures.

The provincial government has sent out four teams over the weekend to assess the area.

The provincial disaster coordinator Albert Bogembo says three teams have returned, confirming that 5,000 people are affected, but the last team, assessing an area with a population of about 6,000 people, is yet to come back.

Mr Bogembo says most people's food gardens have been destroyed in the assessed area and they need emergency supplies.

"The administrator has committed 35 000 kina for the relief supply. We're targetting the affected areas. We'll be having teams out with relief supplies as of today."

Albert Bogembo says the teams will deliver rice and other staples to the affected families.
