The evacuation of low-lying areas has started on Taveuni ahead of Tropical Cyclone Mick.

Villagers were advised yesterday afternoon to move to higher ground and disaster management officials say the exodus has started.

Most residents have moved to the higher parts of their villages, well away from the sea or rivers and creeks.

The Fiji Times says local disaster officials have reported that village churches, halls and schools have been put to use as evacuation centres.
