The Meteorological Service in Fiji says the weather system known as Cyclone Mick has weakened and it's issuing downgraded weather warnings for a depression as it heads towards Tonga.

A gale warning is now in force for the Tongatapu island group in Tonga.

A strong wind warning remains in force for Nomuku and Ha'apai groups.

Close to its centre the weather system is estimated to have average winds of 30 to 35 knots with momentary gusts to 45 knots.

It is currently moving southeast at 10 knots.

If it maintains its current intensity and its forecast track, it may bring damaging gale force winds over the Tongatapu and Eua island groups in the next 24 to 30 hours.
