6:38 am on 16 December 2009

The Meteorological Service in Fiji says the weather system previously known as Cyclone Mick has weakened and it's issuing downgraded weather warnings for a depression as it heads towards Tonga.

Gale warnings have now been cancelled.

Strong winds are now forecast for the Tongatapu, Ha'apai, and Eua island groups in Tonga.

The depression is expected to lie 185 kilometres southwest of the capital, Nukualofa at nine this morning.
