9:45 am on 16 December 2009

The West Papuan political prisoner Sebby Sambom has been released from Abepura Prison in Indonesia's Papua region.

In September Mr Sambom has served almost half of a two-year sentence for his part in a peaceful demonstration held to support the launch of International Parliamentarians for West Papua movement.

His release comes after a government official from Jakarta visited Abepura Prison to speak with a number of Papuan prisoners.

Numerous other Papuan political prisoners including Buchtar Tabuni, Victor Yiemo, Yusak Pakage and Filep Karma remain in custody for subversion-related convictions.
