More volunteers needed for Samoa post-tsunami reconstruction

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand is looking to recruit more skilled New Zealand volunteers to assist its rebuilding on the tsunami devastated south coast of Upolu in Samoa.

Habitat is working in partnership with Samoa's government to supervise the construction of 250 fales.

Work has already begun in the village of Salea'aumua, and will extend to others early next year.

Habitat New Zealand's chief executive, Pete North, says they have already had a very good response, with 72 New Zealanders already putting in two-week stints in Samoa since the building began a month ago.

And he says the next several months are also well supported, but it is the time beyond that they would like people to think about.

"We have a lot of people that have actually booked places with us to go to Samoa right from January through to March, which is absolutely fantastic. We have been inundated with people but the project is going to be much longer than that, going until at least June. perhaps a bit longer and we still need builders and carpenters especially to come forward for going to Samoa in that time period."
