Sugar cane farmers expect quick recovery after Cyclone Mick

Sugar cane farms on Fiji's island of Viti Levu say they have suffered much damage from Cyclone Mick.

The CEO of Fiji's Sugar Cane Growers Fund, however, says he's confident the industry will recover quickly

Sada Sivan says the cyclone, which swept through on Monday, has damaged sugar cane fields in Lautoka, Ba, Navua and Rakiraki, but farms on Vanua Levu were spared.

"The cane has been affected with the flood waters and the wind but Im sure this is one crop we can rely on to pick up pretty fast and it should be OK, I think."

Sada Sivan says affected farmers can apply for emergency loans from the Fund.

But a source within the sugar industry, who didnt want to be named, says the extent of the damage has been extensive and some people are close to losing their livelihood.
